The Little Square Garage
4/5 Dayni Rating
So I was driving home from The Brown Hill Farmers Market a few weekends ago, and this gem of a cafe caught my eye as I drove by. You all know me, I love a striking door! And this door...striking! So I decided I must eat there, even if only for the super Instagram-able storefront! But then I found out that they had strawberry toasties... and I fell in love.
The moment you step through the striking door at Little Square Garage you will understand why it is named so. The exposed wooden beams in the ceiling are painted black against the silver roof insulation, the exposed brick walls and the weathered concrete floor scream garage! There's a retro drink fridge standing in the corner, the counter appears to be reclaimed from the 70's, and the random assortment of old wooden tables and metal chairs really play to the theme of the cafe. The work of local artists line the walls, and as you venture deeper into this garage you'll find all sorts of goods made by local craftsmen and women. From magnets to hair ties to cups and saucers, cushions, t-shirts, handbags, birdhouses, cards, fabrics, and even jocks and socks, which at this time of year are hanging in the form of a Christmas tree! Because everyone needs at least one new pair of jocks and sock for Christmas! It's a Little Square Garage in every sense, but it's the sort of garage that you could imagine nothing less than a pristine, vintage, canary yellow hot rod sitting in. It has a rustic style, and a charming character, it's actually sporting somewhat of a rock-a-billy aura despite the lack of anything specific that screams rock-a-billy!
So, although I'm usually a dessert, sweets, cakes, ice-creams, all of the above, reviewer, the Little Square Garage doesn't have desserts so to speak... their menu consists of toasties, and toasties only, so today, I am a toastie reviewer! When I heard about this toastie only menu, I was intrigued, I love a cafe that's doing things a little differently, and this was definitely different. But if you're thinking that a toasties only menu would be boring, think again! Some of the flavour combos they have on their menu are brave and bizarre, combinations that I have never seen nor heard of anywhere else, combinations that made their toastie only menu hold it's own against the fanciest cafes in town! and I was dying to try them.
So with my little sister in tow, we ordered one Strawberry and Brie Toastie, and one Strawberry and Nutella Toastie (a classic combo, it never gets old!) and I was pleasantly surprised when they were sat down before us. They definitely weren't your run of the mill toasties. Made with Turkish bread, the crust was beautifully buttery and crunchy and it lent the perfect ratio of bread to filling. There's nothing worse than a toastie that's all bread, but this! I can see why they stand so confidently by their toasties! When you do something this well, it deserves to be the centre of attention! The Strawberries were perfectly cooked, not soo much as to have turned mushy, but just enough to cook out all signs of the tart undertone of fresh strawberries, leaving a perfectly sweet, juicy strawberry that paired with the slightly earthy, slightly nutty brie cheese beautifully!
And the dessert toastie, oh the glorious Nutella and Strawberry masterpiece! The combination of the buttery Turkish Bread, the sweet strawberry slices and warm Nutella oozing from between the layers were delightful, as could only be expected! It wasn't too heavy on the Nutella (which is always a buzz kill for me), but it was 'juuust right' in the words of the infamous Goldilocks. The whole time I was eating this dessert toastie I was thinking it tasted so familiar! I have had Nutella and strawberries together before, but it tasted like something different, something most definitely not a Strawberry and Nutella Toastie. It wasn't until hours after lunch that I finally figured it out, it tastes almost exactly like a deep fried Mars bar, I know! Weird! Because there are no strawberries in a Deep Fried Mars bar, nor Nougat in the toastie, so don't ask me why, but it did! And god I love deep fried Mars bars! So if you're craving a sweet or savoury toastie... or a Deep Fried Mars Bar, I seriously recommend you check out Little Square Garage, you won't find a better toastie in town!
Their specials are ever-changing, and both the toasties featured in this article are specials only available until the end of November 2018! So get in quick! There is, however, a chicken, strawberry jam and brie toastie on their regular menu if you miss out on the Strawberry specials, and I'm sure it too is absolutely amazing!
