5 Sweet Reasons To Visit The Talbot Markets

5 Sweet Reasons To Visit The Talbot Markets

My friend Sarah and I have been frequenting the Ballarat Markets every Saturday for a while now,  Mainly just to stock up on fresh produce for the week ahead, but this weekend... we decided to change things up. We'd heard great things about a market in a tiny town called Talbot, and we thought we'd give it a go! And just like that, my weekly grocery shop turned into a Market Stall Dessert Hop.

We arrived earlier than we usually do, as a general rule we rock up to markets at around 10:00am when things are just starting to liven up, but at 9:30am, just half an hour after the market opened, the streets of Talbot were already bustling! We wandered around the 'Road Closed' sign that separates the cars from the people, and were immediately overwhelmed by the number of vendors... little did we know, we hadn't seen anything yet! I didn't even make it 50m into the market before stopping to make my first purchase. Surprise, surprise... it's wasn't edible... well, not yet anyway! I just couldn't walk past the glorious (and last remaining) Granny Smith Apple Tree in this one vendor's shop.  Some girls like to collect shoes... I like to collect fruit tree's, so sue me! Luckily the man was kind enough to set aside for me to grab on my way out.. because I still had A LOT of shopping to do! (I just prayed that I would remember to come back for it!)

Vegetable seedlings to the left, Florists to the right, Utes filled with chickens in the park, and fresh produce stalls coming out the wazoo! There were waves of people wandering in and out of the small towns usually quiet cafes, and if you paused for a moment to look down, there were almost as many dogs as there were people! Which for a couple of animal lovers.. made for one hell of a day out in itself. Our eyes must have given away our desperate attempts to hold in girlish screams every time a cute dog was approaching because rarely did we have to ask to meet them! Their owner would just smile and offer their pooch up for some pats, and who am I to refuse? We made friends with a German Sheppard puppy, a gorgeous-year-old Maremma pup, a HUGE Rottweiler.. and a calf... yep, a calf!

As we walked through the 'Trash and Treasure' section as I like to call it, we looked across to see a young boy sitting on the grass, just casually reading a book with his jersey calf propped up beside him. Of course, I had to ask if I could have a pat!...
"You can do anything to him if I grab his bottle". and so the lad promptly pulled a giant bottle of milk from his backpack and the calf proceeded to gorge himself on it as we marvelled at his beauty and snuck in a few cuddles.

... but I think we all know what I was really searching for... desserts!!

Their Cronuts are to die for !! but they're far from a one trick pony. Their entire range of desserts is utterly delicious, so you can't go wrong no matter what you choose... but the Banofee Cronut (banana custard, white chocolate ganache, crunchy banana bread and a toffee drizzle) and the Apple Crumble Cronut (no explanation needed)  are definitely my winning picks.

So, she doesn't have a business name.. just a little bike out front with 'Stoopwaffles' written on it, so I'm just going to call her The Stroopwaffle Lady. For those who don't know what Stroopwaffles are, they're a dutch spiced waffle which is cut in half and then sandwiched back together with hot caramel sauce. Seriously... they will change your life! A piece of advice from your friendly neighbourhood Stroopwaffle guru, ask for a HOT Stroopwaffle... you can thank me later.

Have you tried our new freshly cooked molasses licorice from Uncle John's?

I know not everybody loves liquorice, but I adore it! And I have never before had liquorice this wonderfully soft! The secret... it was baked the day before the market. It doesn't get much fresher than that!

#4 Cornish Cream Fudge

I am not usually a fan of fudge... but hubby loves it, and that right there should tell you why, usually,  I don't. (hubby LOVES sickly sweet sweets). But this fudge... I'm going to say... is the best fudge I've ever eaten! There I said it! There are so many flavours to choose from, and they will kindly let you taste test each and every one if you request it (Sarah has done so many times, this fudge is a staple in her diet) but if you want my recommendations, the chilli chocolate and the good old traditional clotted cream are the best!

Our passionfruit delight has gained a reputation for its REAL pulpy flavour and lingering after taste.

Turkish Delights have been a weakness of mine since I was a kid, and even more so now after discovering D'lightful! I've had my fair share of 'fresh' Turkish Delights in my time, but the wonderfully soft texture of D'lightful's Turkish Delight is on a whole level above 'fresh'. They have an assortment of fruity flavours, which you all know is right up my alley! and I wan't to say
"Just try them all!", but I can't expect you to live off Turkish Delight for the rest of the week... So, if you twist my arm, my favourite is their Pistachio and Pomegranite, it's just divine! but I can't go past their traditional Rose Water and Almond either!
